Brain Cancer Prevention and Detection
Here’s what you need to know
Most brain cancer is not associated with any risk factors, so we don’t know how to prevent it. There are no screening tests to detect brain cancer early. However, there is very little evidence that early detection and early treatment increase survival.
The primary known risk factor for brain cancer is exposure to radiation. Before the risks of radiation were understood, children sometimes received radiation treatments for ringworm. Today, the primary reason for exposure to radiation is treatment for cancer. The most common case is people who had leukemia as children and received radiation to the brain as a treatment.
Most brain tumors are diagnosed because of symptoms caused by pressure in the brain.
- Headache (common symptom)
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abnormal sleepiness
- Epileptic seizures
- Weakness of a body part
- Difficulty speaking or walking
- Problems with coordination
- Sometimes even a personality change
Obviously, these can be symptoms of many diseases, not just brain cancer. Talk to your doctor if you have any of these symptoms, especially if they are getting worse over time.
